Sewer System - Laser Profiling

Ovalization of pipes is a deformation phenomenon that occurs when a pipe, initially circular, deforms into an elliptical shape. Can-Explore conducts ovalization tests using templates and laser profilometers, ensuring that the pipes have no deformations exceeding the permissible limits according to the standards of the Bureau de Normalisation du Québec (BNQ).

Our Method

We conduct ovalization tests using two techniques:

Gauges
Our ovalization tests can be performed with gauges tailored to the diameter of the pipes to be inspected. The gauges used are specifically designed for each pipe diameter and allow the measurement of maximum permissible deformations:

  • 5 % after construction
  • 7,5 % after one year

Laser Profilometer
Our team uses laser profilometers to conduct detailed deformation studies. This technology identifies deformed areas, measures deformations with maximum precision, assesses the impact of ovalization on the network’s operation, and recommends necessary corrective measures.

Post-Construction Inspection Requirement

The BNQ mandates ovalization tests for so-called flexible pipes (HDPE/PVC) after construction. For more details, visit our post-construction inspection page.

What are the causes of pipe ovalization?

  • External Loads
The weight of the soil on the pipes, road traffic, or any other loads can exert pressure on the pipes, causing deformation.
  • Aging of Materials Over time
The materials of the pipes can deteriorate, making them more susceptible to deformation.
  • Installation Defects or Poor Workmanship
Incorrect installation can leave voids around the pipe, leading to ovalization under load.

On which types of pipes can ovalization be validated?

We can conduct ovalization tests on all types of pipes made from flexible materials, excluding concrete pipes. This includes PVC, HDPE, and TTOG pipes.

  • Gauges allow validation of ovalization for pipes with diameters from 150 to 525 millimeters (6 to 20 inches).
  • The laser profilometer can be used for pipes with diameters from 150 to 1800 millimeters (6 to 70 inches).
